TAC Highlights the Structural Gaps in Melanin-Rich Aesthetics at WEAR YOUR SKIN

The aesthetics industry has grown significantly over the past decade. However, much of its early research, device calibration, and product development was historically centred on Caucasian skin. While global demographics have evolved and the skin-of-colour market continues to expand, structured clinical protocols have not fully caught up.

Some of the challenges faced by the melanin-rich community include limited representation in dermatology research and AI datasets, product and device testing primarily conducted on lighter skin types, and a shortage of specialised clinical protocols tailored to how melanin-rich skin responds to inflammation and treatment. These structural gaps often lead to misdiagnosis, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and inconsistent aesthetic outcomes.

This reality was at the centre of discussion at WEAR YOUR SKIN, hosted by The Aesthetic Clinic UK (TAC). The event took place on Saturday 21st February 2026 at TAC’s new North Central London studio, the clinic’s 13th branch spanning three continents and multiple cities.

The studio was transformed into a calm, gallery-style space, featuring curated fashion displays from designers including Manush, House of Estree, and Osime Saibu, whose aesthetics aligned seamlessly with storytelling, confidence, personal identity, and the diverse richness of the melanin spectrum. Guests enjoyed signature curated drinks, canapés, and light games, and participated in interactive moments such as an anonymous Skin Loop Wall highlighting shared skincare challenges and a Wear Your Skin editorial portrait corner for professional photography. The mood was relaxed yet engaging, creating a premium environment where attendees could explore the intersection of fashion, identity, and skin confidence.

During the event, one of the key questions from special guests like Yetunde Oduwole, known for her roles in You Don’t Know Me and Meet the Adebanjos on Netflix, was:

"How should you care for your skin as an older woman? What should you be doing differently?"

Dr Jones responded, explaining that consultation is the first step for every client. Skin responds differently depending on age, lifestyle, medical history, and genetics. For older women, hydration and exfoliation remain foundational, but the method, frequency, and products must be tailored to individual biology. “The medium of exfoliating and hydrating is what we need to find out for each woman,” the doctor said. “Every plan is personalised because no two skins are the same.”

Another discussion at the event highlighted why some treatments appear successful initially but leave darker marks or uneven pigmentation. One of the doctors explained that melanocytes in melanin-rich skin operate in an interconnected network. Even subtle inflammation can trigger pigment production beyond the original treatment area. Without thorough consultation and screening, underlying triggers may be missed, resulting in recurring pigmentation or uneven results.

“Consultation is not optional,” the doctor emphasised. “Skin carries a lifetime of information. Healing patterns, hormonal shifts, diet, stress, and previous treatments all influence how it responds. Understanding these factors allows us to design safe, effective, and long-term solutions rather than reactive fixes.”

WEAR YOUR SKIN reinforced a critical message: inclusion in aesthetics must go beyond representation to research, clinical protocols, and personalised care models. Through structured consultation-led care, TAC helps individuals achieve healthy, glowing skin that works with their biology, not against it, within a premium, immersive experience celebrating self-expression, fashion, and confidence.
