Wrinkles and lines on the face

The wrinkles and lines on our faces are the result of ageing, lifestyle, sun damage, genetics and use or overuse of facial muscles. Smoking, hormones and stress can make wrinkles worse and lead to premature wrinkling. Wrinkles which occur with ageing are caused by a variety of reasons and the treatment is assessed based on the cause. We assess these factors during your initial consultation and offer advice on ways to maintain your skin in the best possible way. However you cannot influence all these factors. This is where we can help with muscle relaxing injections to relax those muscles responsible for producing facial wrinkles.

The injection of a purified neurotoxin has a local effect of reducing muscle action and relaxing the muscle smoothing out the skin. The injection treatment has been used for over 20 years on thousands of patients to treat many neurological and eye disorders as well as reduction of wrinkles. The injections are prescription drugs which should only be used under medical supervision. The injection works by blocking nerve transmission between the nerve endings and the muscle fibres around the injection site to relax the muscle so that they don't contract. The untreated facial muscles contract in the normal way, allowing normal facial expression to be unaffected. The aim is to break the habit of frowning.

Over a year or two the excessive frowning habit can be broken. The commonly affected areas include forehead lines, frown lines between the eye brows and crows feet at the corners of the eyes. Treatment does not take very long usually about 20 minutes using a very fine needle in precise locations on the face. The first effects start after about 3 days and the complete effect is visible in 2 weeks. The effects of the treatment last 3-4 months.

Clinical studies indicate that treatments last longer over time so that you should require fewer injections in the future. However, this varies from patient to patient. Many wrinkles and lines are caused by making the same expression thousands of times and eventually a crease forms in the skin.

Common sites for expression lines are found between the brows, across the forehead and at the corners of the eyes. These lines in the upper part of the face are best treated with a muscle relaxant. The aim is to restore, maintain or enhance your natural looks while retaining your natural expressions. 

What areas can be treated with wrinkle relaxing injections?

• Frown Lines: above the bridge of the nose Forehead lines: Horizontal lines between the hairline and eyebrows.
• Crows feet: Lines radiating outwards from the corners of the eyes.
• Bunny lines: Those that appear along the side of the nose.
• Lower Jaw definition: Reducing the jowl look under the lower jaw.
• Necklines: Those lines produced by the platysma muscle radiating from the lower jaw along the front of the neck and decolletage. Sometimes referred to as turkey neck these lines are either horizontal necklace lines or the vertical bands that are prominent when you clench your teeth.
