Ahead of Menopause Awareness Month, Advanced Nurse Practitioner and Clinical Director Emma Wedgwood shares her unique approach to skincare during menopause: the Menopause Skin Map.

As Emma explains, menopause affects the skin in different ways across the face. “Different facial zones age differently during menopause,” she says. “That means a one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t work – each area needs targeted treatment.”

The Menopause Skin Map is designed to guide bespoke protocols for each zone, moving beyond conventional aesthetic treatments. By addressing the unique needs of each area, this approach helps maintain skin health, combat signs of ageing, and support confidence throughout menopause.

Whether you’re noticing fine lines, changes in skin texture, or loss of volume, understanding your Menopause Skin Map can help you choose treatments that are tailored specifically to you – not just generic fixes.

Menopause treatment

Emma Wedgwood reveals why a postcode approach to menopausal skin delivers superior results. Introducing The Menopause Skin Map – a treatment approach which recognises that different facial zones age differently during menopause, requiring targeted intervention rather than one-size-fits-all solutions. With Menopause Awareness Month approaching and growing awareness that 13 million women in the UK are currently experiencing menopause*, Emma's clinical mapping system addresses what she calls the "postcode lottery" of menopausal skin changes.

"Traditional aesthetic treatments approach the face as one entity, but menopause doesn't affect your skin uniformly, different facial zones lose collagen, elasticity, and moisture at varying rates. It's like your skin develops different postcodes – each requiring its own targeted treatment plan."

The Five Menopausal Skin Zones

Drawing from her clinical practices in Mayfair and Kingston, Emma has identified five distinct facial zones that respond differently to declining oestrogen levels:

Zone 1: The Eye Envelope – The delicate periorbital area where skin thins dramatically, losing up to 40% of its thickness during menopause.

“This zone needs rebuilding from within, not just surface plumping”.

Zone 2: The Cheek Highway – Where volume loss creates that distinctive hollow look.

“This isn’t about adding filler everywhere – it’s about understanding the anatomical support structures that hormone loss affects.”

Zone 3: The Jawline Junction – Where skin laxity first becomes visible as supporting tissues weaken.

“Many women notice their jawline softening before any other menopausal skin change.”

Zone 4: The Neck Territory – Often neglected but showing the earliest signs of collagen breakdown.

“The neck tells the truth about hormonal skin changes before the face does.”

Zone 5: The Décolletage District – Where chest skin becomes increasingly fragile and prone to pigmentation changes.

"This zone is particularly vulnerable to both internal hormonal changes and external environmental damage."

Emma's mapping approach moves beyond conventional aesthetic treatments to create bespoke protocols for each zone. Her methodology combines advanced technologies, including laser, micro-needling, and targeted injectables with medical-grade skincare specifically formulated for hormonal skin changes.

"Rather than treating symptoms, we're addressing the underlying physiological changes, when oestrogen declines, your skin literally changes at a cellular level. We need to work with those changes, not against them."

Perhaps most importantly, Emma's mapping system recognises that timing is crucial for optimal results during the menopausal transition.

"There's a sweet spot during perimenopause and early menopause when interventions can be most effective. Too early and you're treating skin that will continue changing. Too late and you're playing catch-up rather than staying ahead of the changes."

The Menopause Skin Map consultations include hormone-informed treatment planning that takes into account where women are in their menopausal journey, whether they're using HRT, and their individual skin response patterns.
