Everything You Need to Know About Microneedling
You might have heard about micro needling before, as it’s a procedure that has become increasingly popular over the last few years.
What exactly is involved in this treatment? And what results can you expect?
Just by its name alone, microneedling might seem daunting at first – but it’s actually a minimally invasive procedure that can offer impressive results. This treatment encourages the production of collagen and increases blood flow, boosting the skin’s ability to repair itself. This is vital for rejuvenating your skin, keeping it firm and youthful-looking.
Microneedling can offer a wide range of benefits, improving everything from fine lines and wrinkles to scars and stretch marks. The promotion of new collagen and elastin keeps skin tight, lessening the effects of sagging, and can also help with pigment issues for a more even-toned skin.

So, What Is Microneedling?
Essentially, microneedling is the insertion of tiny needles into the skin, creating precise, microscopic punctures in the upper layer of the skin – the dermis.
This sounds scarier than it is! The punctures are very small and only go surface-deep, like tiny pinpricks in the skin, and are at all times completely controlled by the aesthetician.

What Happens During the Procedure?
The treatment consists of three sessions, each lasting between 20 minutes and one hour.
These are spaced out by four weeks between each appointment – but results will begin to show after the very first treatment.
Clients are often worried about pain during microneedling – but I apply a topical numbing cream 20 minutes before the procedure to minimise any discomfort experienced, and most patients simply feel the vibration of the Skinpen.
I also use a nutrient- and vitamin-rich serum during the treatment, which gives the skin everything it needs to recover quickly and which enhances the effects of the microneedling.
As the treatment is minimally invasive, you won’t need any downtime afterwards – simply be extra careful of your face for the first 24 hours, and try not to touch it too often to avoid the possibility of infection.
It’s very normal to experience some redness and swelling for a few days afterwards, as well as occasional bruising in some areas. However, you can apply make-up the day after treatment – so you don’t have to worry about hiding away indoors!
It’s important to keep your skin hydrated following your treatment, using a gentle moisturiser to soothe the skin.
I always recommend the daily use of a broad-spectrum, physical sunscreen – but this is especially important after micro-needling, as your skin will be more susceptible to sunlight.
As mentioned above, immediate results will show after your first treatment.
In the short term, your skin will look plumper and much more luminous.
However, microneedling also has long-term benefits, with the procedure having been shown to continue to increase collagen and elastin production months after the treatments have concluded.
