BABTAC The British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology regulates the industry and promotes public awareness of the importance of choosing an appropriately qualified, verified and insured therapist.

With botched surgeries costing the NHS an estimated £1.7 million in corrective procedures, as discussed on today’s Loose Women, the timely issue of "treatment tourism" is highlighted in a current Coronation Street storyline.

Lesley Blair MBE, CEO and Chair of BABTAC & CIBTAC, advises the public to prioritise safety. “With treatments becoming more accessible due to lower costs, decisions that should involve careful research are now becoming more impulsive and tempting for the average person,” she warns.

Treatment tourism is a serious cause for concern

The growing trend of seeking low-cost surgery overseas is a cause for concern, as it significantly increases the risk of complications and substandard outcomes. Drawn in by cheaper prices, more and more UK consumers opting for surgery abroad, but this comes with heightened dangers.

The British Association of Beauty Therapy & Cosmetology (BABTAC), one of the UK’s leading membership organisations for beauty professionals, is raising alarms about the growing number of consumers choosing these "bargain" treatments, particularly amid the ongoing cost of living crisis. The organisation has long campaigned for better regulation to protect consumers and ensure their safety.

The influence of social media and the pull of low prices

As social media continues to promote unrealistic beauty standards, it's no surprise that treatment tourism is gaining momentum. Many individuals are tempted by the allure of discounted treatments, but even less invasive procedures—often perceived as "safer"- can pose serious risks if not performed by skilled, qualified professionals.

BABTAC’s key message? Don't compromise on safety for the sake of savings.

“To reduce risks before booking any beauty treatment, always conduct thorough research. Never be swayed solely by low prices. Ask about the practitioner’s training, ensure they have proper insurance, and inquire about both pre-treatment preparation and aftercare services as a minimum.”
