As the cost of living continues to soar, you might be looking for ways to make your budget stretch a little further.

We’re all in the same boat, so I understand how disheartening it can be when you have to sacrifice some creature comforts to make ends meet.

Luckily, I’m here to tell you that skincare doesn’t have to be expensive. You can maintain your anti-ageing regimen for less with the help of my top tips!

Anti ageing must-haves...

First and foremost, every skincare regimen needs to include sun protection! Sun damage is one of the leading causes of premature ageing, it results in pigmentation concerns, dullness, fine lines and wrinkles and much more. I recommend wearing sunscreen with an SPF factor of 30 or above each day.

Next is moisturiser – this type of product is a personal staple of mine as it works to maintain your skin’s natural barrier and it even helps to minimise environmental damage.

Be sparing in your application and don’t fall into the trap of overusing your moisturiser as your skin can start to rely on it, which can have an impact on natural, healthy skin behaviours.

I also use a daily cleanser to prime my skin at the start of the day, as well as to remove skin products, make-up and dirt in the evening.

Simplify to save on skincare

I’ve touched upon some of my anti-ageing essentials, so now let’s talk about the things you can do to save you time, space and money. The products you use are more of a personal preference, the key is to know which ingredients to look out for. Once you know that, you can select products that are well formulated from a concoction of active ingredients, such as:

  • Retinol

Retinol is a naturally-occurring form of vitamin A, which boasts proven anti-ageing benefits. It helps to accelerate cell turnover and increase collagen production, it also helps to improve the appearance of dark spots, fine lines and wrinkles.

  • Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a fantastic antioxidant that protects against free radical damage and improves existing damage, such as brightening dark spots.

  • Hyaluronic Acid

This is another naturally-occurring compound that hydrates and volumises by drawing out water molecules within your skin.

A chemical exfoliant that dissolves the bonds between skin cells to help eliminate dull, dead skin and reveal radiant, smoother skin beneath. Glycolic acid helps to minimise hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles.

  • Ceramides

Ceramides are naturally occurring lipids that reinforce your skin’s protective barrier and seal in moisture.

Some area-specific products are worthwhile as they require a more gentle approach, such as the eyes. The skin here is thinner than anywhere else on the body, so most eye creams are formulated to be less irritating and highly moisturising. Use a grain of rice size per eye and tap the product in rather than rubbing it as the skin is delicate. Stick to the products that work for you and don’t get carried away with adding too many extra steps to your routine.

Intuitive application

You might find that many brands encourage you to layer your products. Whilst some are only looking to increase their sales, layering is actually beneficial when done in the correct way. Ensure that your products with larger molecules are not applied first as this will stop smaller molecules (usually the active ingredients) from being absorbed. Layering in the wrong way can minimise the desired effects of your products and can even sensitise your skin, causing more problems down the line! Take your time to ensure you’re only applying the things that your skin needs.

Skincare tips for improved skin health

Another tip is to only introduce one new product to your anti ageing regimen at a time, so that you can accurately keep track of what does and doesn’t work for you. Perfecting your skincare is a tricky process and trying multiple things at once will draw out the process and leave you confused. Add something, see if it works, take it out/leave it in, and then add something else if you need to.

There’s more about anti-ageing…
