The UK aesthetics industry is large, varied, and for now largely unregulated at the point of treatment delivery. Understanding what 'medically led' actually means — and why it matters for your safety — is one of the most important things you can do before booking any aesthetic treatment.

What Does ‘Medically Led’ Mean?

The term refers to aesthetics services where a qualified, regulated healthcare professional — such as a doctor, nurse prescriber, or pharmacist prescriber — is directly responsible for both the clinical assessment and the treatment itself.

At MeiLustre Clinic, every consultation, prescription and treatment is delivered personally by Zheng Yu Hu, an Advanced Nurse Practitioner and Independent Prescriber registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). With over 40 years of clinical experience in NHS and hospital settings, she brings a background in complex clinical care to every appointment.

Why Does It Matter?

Some aesthetic treatments involve prescription-only medicines. Under UK law, these must be prescribed by a qualified prescriber following a face-to-face assessment. However, in practice, there is significant variation in how rigorously this is applied across the industry.

When your prescriber is also your treating clinician, there is no separation between the clinical decision and the person carrying it out. Everything happens within one clinical relationship, with full accountability.

What to Look for Before Booking

Before booking any aesthetic treatment, it's worth asking:
•       Who is prescribing the treatment, and what are their qualifications?
•       Will the same person assess me and treat me?
•       Is the clinic regulated — and by whom?
•       What happens if something goes wrong?

These are not unreasonable questions, and any reputable clinic should welcome them.

CQC Registration

MeiLustre Clinic is registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) — the independent regulator of health and social care in England. CQC-registered clinics must meet national standards for safety, effectiveness and care, and are subject to inspection. This is a meaningful marker of accountability that not all aesthetic clinics hold.

The Consultation Is the Treatment

At MeiLustre, no treatment takes place without a proper face-to-face clinical assessment. Medical history, contraindications, suitability, expected outcomes, risks and alternatives are all discussed before anything is agreed. If treatment isn't appropriate, Zheng will tell you — clearly, and without pressure. This is what medically led care looks like in practice.
