Football and Boobs; a man's idea of a good night in or a way to understand a boob job?!

I couldn’t help but put a blog together on this press release which landed in my inbox this week.

Entitled "Football and Boobs: His Playbook for Her Breast Implants" Book Launches With Contest to Win Breast Augmentation Surgery, it caused both shock and amusement in equal measure at first sight.

The book, written by Dallas Davis, an MIT graduate and Aerospace Engineer with help from  Plastic Surgeon Dr. Vipul Dev M.D. aims to give a definitive guide for men so that they can be both informed and supportive if the woman in their life has expressed a wish to have a breast augmentation operation.

And how best to do this?... Well through the comparison with football of course, (American football in this case).

My overwhelming reaction was to tut, “oh dear, another trivialisation of cosmetic surgery, and a competition as well to top it off”. But, looking a little deeper and past the superficial marketing for this book and the giggle-factor it produces, it seems that Dallas has hit on a very valid point.

He chose to write his book when he found himself in the position where his girlfriend wanted breast implants and he didn’t know anything about what that entailed or how he should feel or react to her decision. Something which we probably all over look when thinking about cosmetic surgery; it’s all well and good if one partner decides they want to make changes to their body, but who helps the other partner to understand, cope with and support that decision. Who do they turn to? How can they be involved with that decision and support their partner the best? Do they have a right to feel unsure, scared, upset by their partner’s desire for change?

To make this process simple for men (read into that what you will!), Dallas has split his book into chapters relating to an American football game whereby the 1st quarter relates to gathering information, the 2nd to selecting a surgeon, the 3rd to the day of the surgery itself and finally the 4th to recovery. As well as addressing the primary issues involved in cosmetic surgery such as the surgeon, the risks, the costs etc., it also tackles topics such as whether cosmetic surgery (in this case breast implants) could change the relationship between a couple.

Dallas says on his website; “I’ll never forget the night when my lady told me that she wanted breast implants. I was surprised, and didn’t really know how to react.  ... Breast augmentation significantly impacts a woman’s life, and if her partner doesn’t know how it might affect his life too, their relationship may get strained.  I wrote this book to help men better understand their women and to help draw each pair closer together throughout the breast augmentation process of decisions, surgery, and recovery.”

So on the one hand, this seems like a gimmicky book, a bit of a lad’s laugh because it’s about boobs, but really it demonstrates the often forgotten side of cosmetic surgery, one person may be going under the knife but they really need to think about how that may also affect their partners and immediate family members who all have feelings and concerns that they’re trying to deal with whilst also trying to be as supportive as they can.
