If you’re thinking about having your lips done, then you’ll want to invest in high quality treatment that will deliver impressive, long-lasting results.

To help you decide what to go for and support you on your aftercare journey, here we share Pure Perfection Clinic’s top tips for lip filler recovery…

Choosing the right lip filler

The first thing to be aware of is that all lip fillers are not the same! In the UK, there are hundreds of lip filler brands available but only a handful have scientific evidence supporting their safety and effectiveness.

A hyaluronic acid-based product is most suitable for lip treatments. It can not only add volume, but improve the appearance of lines around the mouth, and add better definition to the lips.

In Pure Perfection Clinic, we use the Juvéderm, Restylane and Belotero brands as they have lots of clinical research behind them, so we know there’s less chance of you experiencing a complication.

Choosing the right lip filler

Finding a reliable lip filler practitioner

Everyone who offers lip filler treatment here is a qualified medical professional with years of training and experience in the most advanced lip filler techniques to suit all types of concerns.

The key things to look out for when searching for a lip filler expert are:

  • Medical qualifications
  • Advanced training from a reputable company
  • An appropriate clinical environment where infection control measures are undertaken
  • Experience in managing complications

What to avoid before a lip filler procedure

A practitioner should not administer lip filler treatment if:

  • You have an active cold sore or infection (if you regularly suffer from cold sores then you should get a prescription for Aciclovir tablets to take for a few days in advance)
  • You’re taking aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs (these should be stopped a week in advance)
  • You’ve had dental treatment or other treatment around the lips in the past two to four weeks
  • You’re pregnant or breastfeeding

Essential lip filler aftercare advice

After a lip filler procedure, your practitioner should provide guidance on how to look after your lips to manage side effects and reduce the chance of complications. These will include:

  • Avoid touching the treatment area for at least 12 hours
  • Do not participate in exercise for 24 hours
  • Avoid drinking alcohol for 24 hours
  • Do not expose yourself to extreme temperatures (such as hot tubs) for 24 hours
  • Avoid using make-up around the area for 12 hours
  • Do not smoke for at least 24 hours
  • Avoid blood thinning medication like ibuprofen or aspirin for 24 hours
  • Apply ice to help reduce swelling
  • Use arnica cream to minimise bruising
  • 24/7 contact details to get hold of your practitioner if you have any concerns following the procedure

It’s also essential that you attend a follow-up appointment to check the results of your lip filler treatment and create a plan to maintain results moving forward.
