I recently spent a weekend with Dr Angelo Rebelo, a renowned Plastic Surgeon based in Lisbon, Portugal, picking up the finer points of the eyelid surgery without scars (mini-blepharoplasty).
This is suitable for patients who have minimal to moderate skin excess in the eyelids but have significant puffiness due to fat herniation (eye bags).
It is performed under local anaesthetic.
A small 5mm cut is made in the eyelid skin over the fat pads to remove the fat.
Each eyelid takes between 10 to 15 minutes.
The cut is closed with a single stitch that is removed at 3 days.
The skin is immediately treated with fractional CO2 laser (Smartxide) to encourage skin tightening and the reduction of fine lines.
Bruising and swelling settle between 1 to 2 weeks. Risks of complications are minimal. The usual risks of a formal blepharoplasty including obvious scarring, lid retraction and surgical stigmata are avoided.
I think patients who do not scar well or have a loose eyelid prone to problems with the traditional eyelid reduction surgery, will welcome the mini-blepharoplasty. It is especially suitable as a combined procedure with the one-stitch face lift.
