Over the past decade, non-surgical aesthetic procedures in the UK have increased significantly, with many falling outside regulatory oversight. Both medically and non-medically trained practitioners are performing treatments that may pose risks without proper supervision, leading to a rise in public complaints.

To address these concerns, a clear set of competencies and standards was needed to ensure safety and accountability. However, the lack of mandatory premises inspections has resulted in inconsistencies in quality and safety.

In response, the Joint Council for Cosmetic Practitioners (JCCP) was established to oversee voluntary regulation, alongside the Cosmetic Standards Practice Authority (CPSA) to set evidence-based practice standards.
