Weight loss injections have recently gained rapid popularity and attention in the media as a solution to losing unwanted weight. Endorsed by many celebrities and public figures, these injections are increasingly viewed as an effective way to lose weight, but exactly how effective are weight loss injections?
In this article we discuss the success of weight loss injections as part of long-term weight management and cover a few of the things you need to think about if you are considering this type of treatment.
What are Weight Loss Injections?
Weight loss injections are a type of prescription treatment that can aid with weight loss.
These jabs contain medications that mimic the hormones which suppress your appetite and influence your metabolism. Therefore helping you to reduce and regulate your hunger, leading to lower calorie consumption and in turn, increased weight loss.
How do Weight Loss Injections Work?
As we mentioned above, weight loss injections work by altering your appetite and metabolism, resulting in a reduced calorie intake. These medications also have an effect on insulin production and blood sugar regulation. This is why they are found to be beneficial for patients with type 2 diabetes.
Weight loss injections work by essentially signalling your brain to suppress your appetite, allowing you to eat less and feel fuller for longer after a meal. As well as this they slow down the rate of food digestion, resulting in an overall reduced appetite.
How Effective are Weight Loss Injections?
Weight loss injections are most effective when combined with a change of habits and lifestyle factors. The amount of weight you can lose whilst taking these injections varies depending on a number of factors. This includes your starting weight, your personal medical history and your daily habits, including exercise and food consumption.
Reports by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases show that on average people who took weight loss injections lost between 5 to 10% of their body weight within 6 to 12 months. These results can of course vary between different brands of medication and individual patients. Clinical trials by Wegovy (a weekly pen), for example, report that participants lost an average of 14.9% of their body weight over 68 weeks, whilst participants on Saxenda (a daily pen), lost an average of 9.2% of body weight over 56-weeks.
It is essential to highlight that these results are average across the whole group of participants and you may lose more or less weight. It’s equally important to note that to maintain results you will need to continue using the weight loss injections alongside a healthy, balanced diet.
Research on the long-term results of weight loss injections is still ongoing. This is why it’s important to make long-term healthy lifestyle changes, whilst on the treatment.
What Weight Loss Injections Are Available on the Market?
The most popular brand of weight loss injections which most people have heard of is Ozempic, this is the US version of Wegovy. It is important to remember there are a range of treatments available depending on your individual needs, lifestyle and desired results.
