Deborah Sandler

Deborah Sandler (BA, MBACP) is a psychotherapist with a background in philosophy of aesthetics and is the first cosmetic surgery counsellor. In Jan 2000, together with clinical psychologist Dr Art Anderson, she set up offering professional emotional support for pre- and post-op cosmetic surgery patients. Deborah recently launched supported by Prof Windy Dryden.

Her earlier career history was in admin working for Saatchi and Saatchi, Channel 4 and L’Oreal.

Deborah has struggled with Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) all her life and has had benefit from two cosmetic surgery procedures.

Deborah was born in New Jersey, grew up in Glasgow, has lived in Los Angeles and Washington but calls London her home.

Emotional support and consent play an important role in consulting for surgical and non-surgical cosmetic treatments

Whether you call it psychotherapy, counselling or emotional support it all amounts to the same thing - the ability to help the patient explore what is going on for them emotionally with reference to a cosmetic intervention.

Specifically trained cosmetic surgery counsellors would make a valuable addition to the forthcoming patient safety regulations resulting from the Keogh Review.
