The internet, social media and the world at large are full of common skin and skincare myths. Some of these are passed down through generations; others are used to sell products. Yet, the thing to remember about myths is that they aren’t necessarily rooted in truth.

As an aesthetics professional, it doesn’t sit well with me that so many people fall foul of bad skincare advice. That’s why I am committed to ensuring that my skincare guidance is always based on fact and that all my treatments are performed with integrity and professionalism.

Read on to discover five of the most common skincare myths and whether or not you need to take them with a pinch of salt.

Common Skin And Skincare Myths

You Should Always Wash in Hot Water

False. Bathing or showering in high temperatures will leave your skin in, well, hot water!

This is because too much heat will remove the skin’s natural oils, leaving it dry and irritated. Caution should also be taken when washing your face, as it is one of the most sensitive parts of your body.

You can get around this problem by stepping into a bath or shower filled with warm water. Doing so will help you remove dirt successfully without resulting in damage to your skin or compromising its natural oils.

Skincare Products With in-Built SPF Provide Proper Protection

False. You might be mistaken for thinking that skincare products that feature SPF kill two birds with one stone. Wrong. When protecting yourself against UV radiation, I’d always advise investing in a product that’s been designed for the job. Why so? It’s doubtful that you’ll apply enough of your chosen moisturiser or foundation to receive adequate protection.

Instead, I recommend purchasing from Heliocare’s award-winning SPF range. These products contain Fernblock®, a high-performance natural ingredient capable of sheltering your skin cells from sun damage.

You’d be wise to continue to apply SPF throughout autumn and winter to keep your skin safe all year round.

Debunking Skincare myths

Acne Only Affects Teenagers

False. Although synonymous with our school days, acne can persist long into adulthood.

The reasons for this are many, with hormones, genetics and lifestyle all playing a part.

If you have oily skin, you may also find that you’re more prone to breakouts and hard-to-shift spots.

Adult acne is a common concern for many of my patients.

You Can Only Get Skin Cancer From Sun Exposure

False. UV radiation (either from the sun or tanning beds) is the leading cause of skin cancer, but there are many others. Common risk factors include a family history of the illness, having fair skin or being in possession of a large number of moles.

Remember – the daily application of a broad-spectrum sunscreen is your best method of protection against sun damage. You should also make sure to keep tabs on any moles that change colour or shape, as this may indicate skin cancer.

If you notice anything suspicious, contact a medical professional immediately.

Frogs and Toads Will Give You Warts

False. Despite what some people may suggest, frogs and toads will not trigger the emergence of warts on your body.

This common misconception derives from the fact that these amphibians have wart-like glands on their bodies.

Instead, most warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is spread by person-to-person contact, using shared objects or via exposure to contaminated surfaces.
