Are wrinkles inevitable? You are what you eat (and drink)

In the second of our blogs looking at the question, “Are wrinkles inevitable?”, I am going to look at how food and drink can help or hinder our skin quality.

We are all familiar with the saying, “You are what you eat.” This is especially true when it comes to how well your skin ages.

A recent Dutch study of more than 2,700 participants found that dietary habits are associated with facial wrinkling, especially in women.

According to the study, women whose diets include a high amount of red meat and unhealthy snacks tend to have more facial wrinkles than women who include more fruit in their diet.

When you think about it, It makes a lot of sense that what we eat and drink will influence what’s on the outside. We know certain vitamins support the structure of the skin and, equally, that hydration is key to maintaining a plump and healthy face.

So first, let’s look at what to avoid:

Certain foods can cause inflammation in your body, which may accelerate wrinkle formation. In particular, sugars found in foods cause a process called glycation. This is where the sugars found in foods with a high glycaemic index bind to collagen and elastin and weakening them.

So avoid too much of the following:

  • Vegetable oils
  • Margarine
  • Red meats
  • White bread
  • Processed foods

We know that alcohol is a natural diuretic- i.e. it dehydrates us - so the more you drink, the more dehydrated you become. Additionally, it puts your liver under stress, meaning it has to work hard to flush out the toxins and impurities from your body. This can lead to rosacea outbreaks and exacerbate fine lines, acne, and wrinkles, all of which instantly make you look older.

Interestingly, the Dutch study also revealed that alcohol seems to negate the beneficial effects of an otherwise healthy diet.

Wrinkle-busting foods

Certain compounds and vitamins have a positive impact on our skin:

Omega 3 fatty acids and alpha-linolenic acids (ALA) are great for helping to maintain your skin’s soft and supple look, so stock up on the following:

  • Flaxseeds
  • Flaxseed oil
  • Avocados (did you know that Victoria Beckham eats 3 or 4 a day!)
  • Salmon
  • Olive oil

Zinc, Selenium, Vitamin C and Beta Carotene are all critical in the body’s production of collagen, the skin’s scaffolding.

  • Red peppers
  • Carrots
  • Pomegranates
  • Leafy greens
  • Broccoli – just 100g contains 100% of the daily recommended Vit C

Protein

Studies show that insufficient amounts of protein in your diet can cause tears, wrinkles and cracks in the skin.

  • Eggs
  • Lean beef
  • Poultry
  • Beans

Drinking to improve skin quality

One of the most important things you can do for your skin is to drink plenty of water. Your body needs water for almost every function it does and therefore is essential to good health.

Besides vital functions like flushing toxins from your body, aiding with digestion, and regulating your body temperature, water can also help keep your skin healthy and hydrated from the inside.

You don’t just need to drink water of course. Here are a few other suggestions that can have a positive impact on your skin:

Soya Milk: Soya milk contains isoflavones which help to protect collagen. The minerals in soya can also reduce the darkening and discolouration of skin.

Green Tea: Green tea is packed with antioxidants called catechins and polyphenols, which help protect skin from UV radiation and decrease the chances of sunburn. And like other antioxidants, they help decrease redness and inflammation.

Pomegranate Juice: why not try Pomegranate Juice, which contains a huge amount of antioxidants and polyphenols—over twice as much as green tea—and is fantastic for supporting fibroblasts in the skin, which are the collagen-making factories. More collagen equals less wrinkles and fine lines. What’s not to like!
