Omnilux produce a range of devices that use Light Emitting Diode or LED light of different wavelengths (colours) to treat a wide range of skin complaints through photomodulation.
Since 1998, the company (Photo Therapeutics Ltd, part of the Photomedex® company) has been treating skin complaints and medical conditions, including muscle aches and joint pain with LEDs. With 7 U.S. FDA clearances and over 40 clinical trials, Omnilux have a wealth of scientific data to provide peace of mind.
Distributed in the UK by SkinBrands Ltd, the Omnilux range includes the Omnilux Revive² for anti-ageing, the Omnilux Blue for acne and the Omnilux Plus for healing and remodelling the skin.
Omnilux’s range of treatments use a combination of Light Emitting Diodes (LED) lights of different wavelengths (colours), including visible red, infrared and pure light to enhance the complexion, even out scars and spots, plump and rejuvenate ageing skin and improve the appearance of inflamed skin caused by conditions such as acne. This process is known as photomodulation.
The Omnilux range of devices includes:
• Omnilux Revive² (633nm wavelength)
• Omnilux Blue (415 nm wavelength)
• Omnilux Plus (830nm wavelength, infra-red)
Each detachable treatment head includes a matrix of LEDs which are carefully positioned to deliver pure, optimised, narrowband light to the treatment area. These attach to the main device arm.
Omnilux technology uses UV-free LED lights, of a number of different wavelengths or colours. The process of photomodulation stimulates the body’s own cellular mechanisms, encouraging healing and collagen production so that skin appears smoother and more youthful. Skin cells absorb the light from the Omnilux heads.
Different wavelengths of light produce different cell reactions – for example, cells absorb energy from infraredlight.
The energy is converted into heat energy within the cell, causing damage to the cell. This encourages the production of new collagen, and over time as new collagen is produced and cell turnover is increased, skin becomes smoother and more even in tone and texture.
The blue light used in the Omnilux Blue head is anti-inflammatory, reducing bacteria in the sebaceous glands, thus treating and preventing acne.
Encouraging the body’s own cellular response means that the surrounding cells and tissue are unaffected.
The source of energy is light; not heat or lasers, so there is no down time associated with treatment.
Each Omnilux head is fully European CE marked and the brand has 7 U.S. FDA (Food & Drug Administration) clearances.
In 2005, Omnilux Revive (the first model) and Omnilux Blue received FDA clearance as a combined treatment for mild to moderate acne vulgaris. Also Omnilux Revive and Omnilux Plus were FDA cleared for “use in dermatology for the treatment of periorbital wrinkles", and Omnilux Plus received FDA clearance for "the relief of minor muscle and joint pain".
The company also has FDA approval for hand-held, home use LED devices.
Omnilux devices should only be used by trained medical professionals, cosmetic surgeons and beauty therapists.
Omnilux devices can be used to treat the following conditions:
• Omnilux Revive²: signs of ageing, including: fine lines and facial/neck/décolletage wrinkles, sagging skin, dull skin tone and sallow, sunken skin, through biomodulating fibroblast activity, increasing the efficiency of collagen production.
• Omnilux Blue: acne and similar bacterial skin complaints, by targeting the cells in the sebaceous gland, reducing bacterial secretions. The Omnilux Blue also has anti-inflammatory properties, helping to reduce the redness and swelling associated with acne.
• Omnilux Plus: scarred, damaged or ageing skin, stimulating the “contractile” phase of skin remodelling, encouraging the production of lineated collagen, smoothing skin and helping to repair any damage.
Omnilux devices can be used to treat large areas of skin, including the whole of the face and chest. The devices can also be used for pain management.
Treatment with Omnilux is long-lasting if maintained. A healthy lifestyle and proper skincare regimen will ensure excellent results.
Omnilux can be combined with other treatments, such as IPL or cosmetic surgery, which could improve the effectiveness of the LED therapy overall.
There are no side effects associated with Omnilux treatment. The heads use LED light and only the targeted cells absorb the energy from the light. This means that the surrounding cells and upper layers of skin are not affected, as the treatment is non-ablative and non-invasive, which means that there is no downtime.
Some people could experience slight redness, but this should disappear very quickly.
As long as you are generally healthy and don’t have any active skin diseases or infections in the area being treated, there are few medical reasons why you should not undergo this treatment.
However, pregnant and breast feeding women should avoid Omnilux treatment unless they have been cleared by their GP for treatment.
The time taken for a treatment session will depend upon the size of the area and indication being treated, although a typical treatment could take approximately 20 minutes. Between 5 and 10 treatments are recommended, depending on the indication.
The cost of treatment depends on the area(s) being treated and the indication and can start from approximately £45-60 per session.
