Alkaline Wash, produced as a branded product by the Danné Montague King range is a relatively new and more importantly safe treatment for the removal of fine downy hair of any colour from the face or other body parts, such as arms.
This means that it can target certain hair which isn't well targeted by other methods of hair removal such as electrolysis or laser or IPL hair removal, as it's usually too dense and fine. It can therefore be use to complement or enhance results achieved with the use of these other methods of hair removal.
The other advantage of Alkaline Wash is that you can remove large areas of hair in one treatment with no discomfort which isn't the case with other hair removal systems where slight discomfort is expected.
Alkaline wash is comprised of an alkaline powder which is mixed into a paste and then applied onto the skin where there is hair to be treated.
The treatment essentially works by dissolving part of the underlying hair follicle which causes the release of the hair. This action leaves you with smooth, hair free skin immediately following treatment. Repeat treatments may well be required though to achieve a long term reduction in the hair in the treated area.
Danné Montague King Alkaline Wash is most effective for treating fine, downy hair. Although it can be used elsewhere, such as on the forearms, it is particularly suitable for the face and upper lip areas where there is often a dense growth of very fine hair which is cosmetically unappealing to many women. This is the kind of hair which may also struggle to find successful methods for removal.
After the first treatment the hair will normally grow back at its normal rate, but as treatments progress the re-growth is said to become slower. It is impossible to predict how many treatments will result in permanent hair reduction. This is is achievable for some people using this method, but it's not guaranteed as every person and their hair is different in many ways.
Some people however do report a reduction in hair growth after just one treatment.
At your first consultation with a practitioner, you should explain what you expect from the treatment and how you would like to look afterwards. He or she should tell you exactly what the treatment will involve. A medical history should be taken by the practitioner, to ensure that there are no reasons why you shouldn’t have the treatment. Once this is established, you would normally be asked to read some detailed information and sign a consent form indicating that you have understood the potential benefits and risks associated with the procedure recommended.
Photographs may also be taken by the practitioner, for use as a “before and after” comparison at a later date.
Procedure
A patch test is carried out first on the area to be treated, which ensures that your skin is suitable for the Alkaline Wash treatment. This is ususally performed 24 hours before treatment.
Assuming this is the case, the Alkaline powder will be mixed into a paste to form the 'wash' and then applied onto the skin where there is hair to be treated. The 'paste' is left on for approximately 4-5 minutes before being removed.
Repeat treatments
Treatments will be approximately 2 weeks apart to start with and then go onto a month apart and then longer periods of time as the hair starts to reduce its growth rate.
The Alkaline wash treatment is totally pain free.
Some people may find that the area treated can appear red and warm for a short period of time, but this will subside.
The product has a dissolving and damaging effect on the hair follicle and there is no evidence that this procedure results in stimulation of hair growth in dormant follicles, as is reported with waxing.
You must inform your practitioner if you become pregnant or if you take any medication or vitamins in between treatments.
The Danné Montague King Alkaline Wash can be used by all kinds of medically trained staff, including doctors and nurses, as well as trained beauticians and aestheticians.
For more information about practitioner training, qualifications and relevant medical organisations please view the information contained within the Legislation section of the Consulting Room.
It is highly unlikely that anyone considering an Alkaline Wash would be able to access this free of charge on the National Health Service.
Prices for private treatment tend to work by the time required for treatment which will vary depending on the size of the area being targeted with the alkaline wash. Expect to pay approximately £75 per 30 minute session.
