Our hands say a lot about us. Not only do we use them in conversation to express ourselves and communicate but they are constantly exposed and we rely on them for pretty much everything.

With the back of our hands constantly on display, this makes them susceptible to early signs of ageing such as fine lines, wrinkles, thinning of the skin and hyper-pigmentation.

Unlike the face where we can conceal and wear makeup, it can be extremely challenging to mask areas of concern on the hands.

SPF on the Hands?

Before we discuss the treatments that are available to treat the signs of ageing on the hands, it’s important to note that preventative measures are always worth considering. As a population, we are becoming increasingly aware of the benefits of wearing SPF on our face on a daily basis to protect our skin from the damage from the sun.

Don’t worry – I’m not saying that you need to add another dimension into your daily self-care routine… but you know that excess SPF that you tend to wash off once you’ve applied it to your face in the morning? Rather than watching it trickle down the plughole, why not rub that into the back of your hands!

The Damage Has Been Done, I Need Treatment!

If your hands show signs of ageing, a hand lift may be the answer. When considering a hand lift, there are two treatment options to consider to help restore lost volume, rejuvenate the skin and restore the youthful hands you once had. These two options – dermal fillers and collagen stimulators — provide two different but effective ways to achieve hand rejuvenation that will counteract both of the symptoms of ageing hands, loss of volume and skin elasticity.

What Is a Hand Lift?

A hand lift is a procedure which treats the signs of ageing, which can include hollows in the back of the hands, unsightly hand veins as well as loss of skin elasticity and tone. These symptoms can be treated in one of two ways:

  • Dermal Fillers –  These can restore volume, providing patients with immediate results and relief of volume loss.
  • Collagen Stimulators (Ellanse) – This can also restore volume but will also offer rejuvenation of the skin quality and texture by stimulating the body’s natural collagen production.

The length of results from your hand lift will vary depending on which type of hand lift you have had. In general, dermal fillers can produce results which will last anywhere between 3-9 months and require periodic touch-ups, while collagen stimulators can produce results which can last 12-18 months.

While dermal fillers for hands deliver faster results, both methods offer substantial hand rejuvenation to ageing hands.

What Should I Expect From Treatment?

After a hand lift procedure, you will be able to notice healthy volumisation and firmer, smoother skin in the treated areas. Hand veins can also be improved and made to look less prominent since a hand lift will help volumise these areas, masking the prominence of your hand veins.

Generally, a microcannula is used for this procedure, minimising your risk during treatment. Also, this can lead to less swelling and bruising which will speed up recovery.

After receiving your treatment, you can immediately return to your usual daily activities with no downtime.

Immediately after your treatment, it is possible for there to be some minor bruising and swelling but generally, this subsides relatively quickly.
