2017 is here, and no doubt it brought with it the dreaded New Year’s Resolutions! We often make them, but find it tricky to stick to them. I’d like to make some resolutions for looking after your skin, and make them as easy as possible with some incredibly simple tips for more beautiful skin - tips that don’t require a huge amount of thought or effort. So, pick any, or all of them, and look forward to healthier looking skin!
Tip 1: Regularly apply an effective moisturiser, and use skincare products specifically designed for certain areas of your face.
Adequate hydration of your skin to ‘plump out’ the skin cells doesn’t just come from drinking water alone. A diet rich in Omega-3 Fatty Acids can help, but a good quality moisturiser can really help to ensure that your skin remains adequately hydrated and looking as ‘fresh’ and ‘full’ as possible. It’s also important to invest in products specifically designed for certain areas of the face – for example, the delicate area around the eyes.
Tip 2: Remove make-up and cleanse your face every night.
Did you know that by not completely removing make-up every night, you are making it more difficult for your skin to repair itself overnight after a full day of potential damage from the sun, pollution, heat and chemicals? So give your skin a chance to breathe and repair by cleansing properly in the evening, before bed, every night.
Tip 3: Gently exfoliate – at your own peril!
As we age, our body’s ability to shed old skin cells reduces, leading to dull-looking skin caused by a build up of these old cells. Gentle exfoliation of the skin can help to reduce this build up of old cells, revealing fresh skin beneath – however, exfoliation using harsh scrubs can actually tear your skin and contribute to acne flare ups. To prevent this, look for products with exfoliating ingredients like Glycolic Acid, which works to gently exfoliate dead skin away. Alternatively, try a chemical peel, microdermabrasion or hydradermabrasion treatment for a more intensive and effective exfoliation experience.
Tip 4: Be careful with toners, and skincare products in general!
Some skin toners can dry the skin out and upset the pH balance of the skin – as a result, I no longer recommend ‘toning’ as an essential part of your daily skincare routine. Cleansing and moisturising should be enough, if applied effectively.
It’s not just toners that can affect the skin though – some skincare products can contain harsh chemicals that can irritate the skin. Invest in quality products that have been formulated by dermatological experts, and the risk of adverse reactions should be significantly reduced. If you aren’t sure whether your skin is suited to particular products or treatments, why not consider an in-depth skin care analysis session at a cosmetic clinic. They can carry out a detailed analysis of your skin health and condition, and then tailor skincare treatments/recommend products most suited to your unique skin.
Tip 5: Wear SPF every single day, come rain or shine.
This is something that I talk about a lot, but is so important, I’ll mention it again! Few people realise the significant impact that sun damage has on the natural ageing process of their skin, as well as their skin health in general. I encourage patients to be aware of the damaging effects of the sun’s rays (both UVA and UVB, or ‘long wave’ and ‘short wave’ rays) and wear a good quality, high factor sunscreen that protects patients from both. A good quality Sunscreen should be worn every day, even when it is cloudy or you are indoors, as UVA rays can even penetrate glass.
