Male-pattern baldness is the most common type of baldness.

It’s an upsetting condition where the hair gets thinner, sometimes leading or complete baldness. It usually starts around the late twenties or early thirties. It starts with a receding hairline, followed by thinning of the hair on the top of the head (the crown) and around the sides of the head (the temples), leaving a horseshoe shape around the back and sides of the head.

It doesn’t usually lead to complete baldness, but it can happen.

Male-pattern baldness is hereditary, which means it runs in families. It’s thought to be caused by oversensitive hair follicles, linked to having too much of a certain male hormone.

This type of baldness can also affect women (female-pattern baldness). During female-pattern baldness, hair usually only thins on top of the head. It happens more often in women who have been through the menopause maybe because they have fewer female hormones.

Effective treatment for male-pattern baldness

Microneedling Makes Hair-Regrow Faster and Stronger

The good news is that there is effective treatment for male-pattern baldness. Minoxidil foam received FDA approval in the United States over a decade ago for use in treating baldness on the top of the head. A study of micro needling and minoxidil lotion for male pattern baldness has shown that regular micro-needling plus minoxidil lotion is even more effective for treating male pattern baldness – there were no treatment failures in the study, it makes the new hair grow more quickly and the new growth is stronger. In this study 81% of men reported a more than 50% improvement.

All the men who had micro needling and Minoxidil reported at least some improvement, whereas with Minoxidil on its own, 32% of men reported no improvement after 12 weeks. There were no problems with serious side effects, though one man reported sensitivity to the Minoxidil lotion, which settled when it was stopped.
