Microcannula liposuction for breast reduction has featured heavily in the press over the past couple of years as the technology improves and surgeries seek to promote it. It is heralded as an alternative to surgical breast reduction, which has its benefits but also a number of significant drawbacks. With many women coming to clinics complaining that their breasts are causing them discomfort, an alternative to invasive surgical breast reductions has been sought by clinics for a long time. The result of such a search yielded microcannula liposuction or MicroLipo.

The problem with big breasts

On the flipside of the globally popular surgical procedure of breast augmentation are women coping with breasts they find uncomfortable and excessive. Age, weight, genetics, pregnancy, hormone replacement therapy and menopause are some of the factors involved in why some women have problems with their breast sizes. Large breasts can cause chronic back pain, embarrassment, trouble finding clothes that fit, yeast infections and restricted movement, particularly with sports. In response, liposuction techniques have been refined and crafted specifically to suit breast reduction treatments as an alternative to invasive surgical breast reduction.

What actually happens?

Microcannula liposuction, or as it is popularly known as MicroLipo, for breast reduction involves the use of a small microcannula (a small tube that can directly and safely be used to suction fat cells from the subcutaneous layer).

The first step of the procedure is to administer small amounts of local anaesthesia to the breast fat, which results in firmness. The microcannula technique then involves a skin punch to make a hole in the skin of around 1mm in diameter through which the microcannula passes. The fat is then removed and a compression garment is fitted to manage the healing process.

The body’s natural response to such changes is swelling but the technique is specialised in order to greatly reduce the amount of swelling and downtime associated with other liposuction techniques.

The advantages are numerous and often draw distinctions from what surgical breast reduction cannot afford the patient. There isn’t scarring, it can be achieved with just a local anaesthetic and the downtime is reduced dramatically with minimal pain. Surgery can lead to necrosis, which MicroLipo largely avoids as trauma to the tissue is significantly reduced.

There is also less risk of complications as it is non-invasive. The technique was developed by Dr. Jeffrey Klein and only a few European clinics are certified in the technique.

Unsuitable candidates

The procedure is not suitable for all. Obese patients are advised to lose weight in the first instance because breast size will reduce with weight loss.

Candidates who have lost a lot of weight, or have sagging skin due to breastfeeding, are often not suitable as the excess skin may require surgical removal. The fat cells are removed during the procedure and do not return but factors like menopause can cause breast growth at a later stage - something patients should be aware of.
